"a Christmas Story" Is An Instant Holiday Classic By: J Griffin
You probably have a list of Christmas movies that you love to watch every holiday season. Maybe you've made a tradition out of watching classics such as "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby, or "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart. Some prefer the more lighthearted children's classics such as "A Charlie Brown Christmas", or "Santa Clause is Coming to Town". For some of us appreciate the more lighthearted and comedic movies of the season such as "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation", or my personal favorite "A Christmas Story". The holiday season is a stressful time of the year for so many people, it's great to find time to relax and have a good laugh with a great movie. "A Christmas Story" is a timeless classic that has captured the hearts and minds of so many that like to take the Christmas season with a light hearted approach.
What's "A Christmas Story" All About?
The original inspiration for "A Christmas Story" comes from a series of short stories written by Jean Shepherd called "In God we Trust (All Others Pay Cash)". The same author wrote the screenplay and was also the narrator of the film. He also had a small cameo role in the hilarious scene where the kids go to see Santa Claus at the mall. The story follows a young boy named Ralphie whose only wish is to get a "Daisy red Rider 200 shot Carbine Action CC Air Rifle" for Christmas. He's constantly being thwarted by adults however who are telling him that he'll "shoot his eye out" if he does. The movie itself is set in the 1950s and covers all different aspects of the holiday season including family, traditions, and growing up as a young boy. The movie is full of timeless and classic scenes such as the one where a schoolyard boy is "triple dog dared" to stick his tongue to a flagpole.
In 1983, a week before Thanksgiving "A Christmas Story" was first released in theaters. By the time Christmas rolled around that year the film had already run its course. It wasn't until years later that the movie became a huge hit when it was released on video. It since continues to gain in popularity year after year with the release of DVDs and cable broadcasts. Many families incorporate watching this film into their holiday traditions during Christmas time. In the year 2000 "A Christmas Story" hit the road for a stage production of the classic story based on Jean Shepherd's short stories. Called "A Christmas Story" as well, this collection of stories was also released as a book on tape read by Dick Cavett.
